Klimt captured the beauty of the glistening waters of Lake Attersee in his works. The relationship between Austrians and their lakes also seems just as dreamy as a Klimt painting. Many travel to the local lakes to enjoy nature and create countless memories in the process. As a result, more and more people are realizing their dream of a (second) home on a lake - an often expensive status symbol that is not possible for everyone.
The five-member group of artists set out on a journey to explore Austria’s diverse bodies of water. Starting with the largest and best-known to the smallest and least known lakes. They used various media such as videos, sound recordings, infographics and maps to capture and reflect the essence of each journey.
The main focus of the research was to collect water samples from each lake visited. For the group, these bodies of water serve as symbolic representations of the dreamy atmosphere that surrounds Austria’s bathing lakes. The water that animates the visitors is a vital essence that they wish to represent in physical form, for example through a collection of water samples. Some of these samples will be analyzed, while others will be used to create prints using a “water printer” machine.
Through this artistic exploration, the group aims to emphasize the beauty and diversity of Austria’s natural resources while using a creative perspective to highlight the value of water in our society.
“The Lake Watchers” is a poetic documentation of the group’s journey.
